The sun was casting a pale orange light as the boys were starting to gather just outside a friend’s band practice studio.

With boards in tow, the guys were exchanging high fives and pleasantries, occasionally egging on each other about the event to come. They were especially fond of this guy in a black shirt and black jeans with afro hair, jeering at him, saying that the police might come to arrest him for skating in the wrong places.

The story seemed to go that he arrived in Los Baños from Sta. Rosa, Laguna earlier in the day and tried to skate inside the U.P. campus when he was confronted by campus security. It’s normal for skaters to be chased away by security guards of buildings and some public places. Here in the Philippines, there are still very few existing skate parks. Most skaters settle for the public squares and village covered (basketball) courts.

“It’s good that you’ve come to shoot,” says Tata, holding a pen and a notebook, checking every now and then the arrival of participants. Tata, sporting colorful sleeve tattoos and wearing an ethnic patterned shirt, is the vocalist of Embercore, a locally popular metalcore band.

Lester, a drummer from another band, April Morning Skies, and of Embercore as well, arrived and greeted everybody. Wasting no time, Lester was warming up and trying to execute a few high kickflips. I took a snap, testing my camera settings, and caught him in midflight.
